I replaced this image
in my opinion the multi-color violins
took quality away
from the site, most importantly the image
was very low-res
Feel free to replace with any other high-res image.
Not A Whisper!!!
for Big Band (woodwind doubles)
Commissioned by the Eastman Jazz Ensemble
with Benny Golson.
Solos: tenor sax, piano.
Duration—12”

A “recomposition” of Benny Golson’s composition “Whisper Not.” Although the melody of this standard is never literally stated, every musical idea is based directly on some element of the tune. The piece deals with conversations throughout, sometimes several at once. It also begins with a whisper, but ends with a shout.

Jigsaw
for Big Band (woodwind doubles)
Alternate version for jazz sextet (tpt., a. sx., tbn., rhythm section).
Commissioned and recorded as the title track of a CD by the Purdue Jazz Ensemble.
Solos: tenor sax, trombone or guitar, piano.
Duration—7”

This piece is like a puzzle to put together, with the body of the work in 13 (4+2+4+1½+1½), another section in 5, and another with the ratio of 5:3. In addition to jazz, rock, and blues influences, it makes brief references to Middle Eastern music and CNN news trailers.

Based on a traditional Bulgarian round dance, the meter is fast 11/8 throughout. Towards the end, the ensemble breaks into celebration, singing in Bulgarian, accompanied by a Cuban montuno pattern on the piano.
Sing-Sing, A Song
for oblivious vocal soloist and intoxicated big band.
Commissioned by the Eastman Jazz Ensemble.
Solo: voice, trumpet.
Duration—10-12”

Without a doubt, the most unique rendition of Joe Raposo’s famous ‘Sing, Sing a Song.’ The most experimental big band chart in Cutler’s catalogue, this virtuosic presentation is laden with humor, while defying all the expectations of big band writing and easy listening music.

Turkish Delight
for Big Band (woodwind doubles)

This monophonic melody was inspired by the sights and sounds during Cutler’s first visit to Turkey. Almost every measure has its own meter, switching freely between 10/16, 17/16, 3/4, and a host of others. Recording is from combo version.
